Full course description
This course is designed to give students a head start in their university journey by providing foundational knowledge and skills relevant to studying at a tertiary level.
The course guides students through a staged process, beginning with the submission of a brief non-academic writing task and progressing through to the completion through to the completion of a researched and referenced academic essay. Along the way, students will use the university library catalogues to research and evaluate academic resources, read and interpret scholarly texts, and develop their formal writing skills. Students will also learn the techniques for compiling annotated bibliographies and strategies for writing academic essays, including the protocols of in-text referencing (using the APA Referencing Style, Author-Date Style). At the completion of this course, students should be able to plan and manage their study, read and comprehend academic texts appropriate to undergraduate study, access and use a range of resources, and apply academic conventions required for written assignments, ensuring they are fully prepared for their tertiary education.
